Remember the blockbuster movie “anaconda”? In a turn of events that can only be described as shocking and unfortunate, Indonesian police have found the dead body of a man inside a python after he was reported missing on Sunday on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. According to a report by Mashura, a spokesperson for the police in West Sulawesi province, the missing man identified as one Akbar had gone to harvest palm oil and when he failed to return from the farm. Villagers reported to the police that he had been missing for about 24 hrs. The search for the missing 25-year-old led police to believe he must have been swallowed by the snake when they conducted a search and found the snake near the family’s palm plantation. According to the village secretary Salubiro Junaidi, people had heard cries from the palm grove the night before Akbar was found in the snake’s stomach and when the snake was captured, the boots Akbar was wearing were visible in the stomach of the snake. On cutting the snake open, the lifeless Akbar was found in the belly of the snake. The reticulated python is one of the world’s longest reptiles, although they rarely kill and eat humans, they occasionally may swallow young children or animals. Usually, they hunt and kill bigger animals such as wild dogs or boars, suffocating their victims before swallowing them whole. While they also avoid human settlements, they can be found in palm oil plantations as they view such habitations as good hunting grounds. This particular reticulated python was reported to have been 7m (23ft)-long and a video shot by the police showed the locals cutting the snake open with a long knife to slowly reveal the dead man’s clothed body. Last year, an Australian mother, Tamara Thurgood woke to the sound of her six-year-old screams and on reaching the spot he was supposedly sleeping; she found an 8ft coastal carpet python wrapped around his belly. According to relatives, the mother was able to extricate her son from the reptile’s deathly grip but not after the python had repeatedly bitten the boy on the face. Relatives were later called to the property at Eungal Rall, Northern New South Wales and the snake was killed. Some Interesting Facts About Pythons Pythons are ambush predators that mostly lazy around, either digesting a meal or waiting for the next kill. A python can sometimes wait for over a year until its next meal; this is because prior to catching a prey, the python can expand its internal organs to double their size in order to support its digestive system and afterwards lower its metabolic rate and deactivates its digestive system. The reticulated python is one of the longest snakes in the world, capable of reaching over 32ft in length with the longest in captivity held in Kansas City, US, measuring about 25ft according to the Guinness World Records. It can be found in sub-Saharan Africa, Australia, Nepal, Burma, China and Australia. |
