Bordeaux roars back to relevance (and excellence) with the 2014 vintage

Bordeaux’s 2014 vintage is one of the biggest surprises of my 34-year career. In blind tastings, visits to chateaux, and trips to wine consultants’ tasting rooms, I tasted almost 900 wines over two weeks in the area in January and witnessed a near-seismic shift in Bordeaux winemaking. The days of over-extracted and over-wooded wines seem over. I found very few bottles that were overdone, especially compared to wines from 1998 to 2010. Indeed, a new generation of winemakers are taking over in the region, and they are no longer looking for “blockbuster” or New World-styled reds. This makes so many 2014s approachable on release, which means wonderful, drinkable Bordeaux right out of the gate. The best wines, though, will improve with age for decades to come.

The reds show harmony and finesse with solid cores of fruit and extremely polished tannins. There are no cabernet and merlot-based wines in the world with similar refinement and tension. The dry whites show an electrifying acidity with fantastic density. Sweet whites are also excellent but are not as consistent in quality as the latter. “We were surprised ourselves with the quality of the 2014s,” said Philippe Dhalluin, the managing director and winemaker of Chteau Mouton Rothschild, which has one of the wines of the vintage. “The maturation of the wines in the barrel really improved the quality of the wines. I have never seen such an improvement.”

I couldn’t agree more. Many wines outperformed their barrel scores by one to three points when I tried them two years ago. I scored two wines perfect 100 points Chateau Lafleur and Chteau Ausoneand four received 99 points: Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, Chteau Latour, Chteau La Mission Haut-Brion and Chteau Mouton Rothschild. The best 2014s were from the northern Medocspecifically St.-Julien, Pauillac, St. Estephe and farther north in the Haut Médocas well as from the chalk-rich soils of St. Emilion, Castillon Ctes de Bordeaux, and the clay knoll of Pomerol. Dry whites from Pessac-Leognan were also excellent.

The growing season was cold and wet for most of the summer, and the region was bracing for another weak vintage like 2013. But warm and sunny weather in September and October (a magnificent Indian summer) gave the grapes just the right amount of ripeness. Cabernet sauvignon, in particular, thrived thanks to its later picking times. “It could have been a disaster, but we harvested fantastic grapes in the end,” said Frederic Engerer, the head of the first growth Chteau Latour.

What makes the 2014s even more appealing is their prices. This may be the best value in Bordeaux since the 2008 vintage, especially if you’re paying in Hong Kong dollars, Renimibi or US dollars. The Euro has dropped against the US dollar since the 2014 harvest by about 18%. There has been very little movement on prices in Bordeaux since the top wines were released as en primeur during the early summer 2015. Wines like Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou or Chteau Léoville-Las Cases should be about $110 to 130 a bottle. First growths like Chteau Mouton Rothschild or Chteau Lafite Rothschild should be anywhere from $400 to $450 a bottle.

But most of the wines I tasted were a fraction of the cost of those wines, and even lesser ranked estates from appellations as simple as just Bordeaux or Bordeaux Superior made very good wines. You can find excellent bottles between $20 to $40 from places like Castillon Ctes de Bordeaux, Puisseguin-St.-Emilion, and Fronsac. Some of the lesser growths from the 1855 Classification that scored 93 to 95 points are even in the $35 to $55 range.

Finding these wines is another question. Unlike in Asia where wine trade embrace Bordeaux with abandon, it seems to me that the wine trade in North America see Bordeaux as expensive, dated, unfashionable, difficult to drink when young and so on. For that reason, restaurants and retailers in the United States often keep a slim selection. But if there were ever a time to flip those perceptions on their head, if there were ever a time to experience what real Bordeaux is all about,
